Meet Alabama Sawyer

Cliff Spencer learned woodworking the long way. He built sets for high school plays. He designed window displays for Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. He spent years on film sets in Los Angeles, building worlds that would last six weeks of shooting and then get torn down. Between every shoot, he kept a wood shop running. Eventually, the things he built there mattered more than the things he built on set. He never looked back.

Leigh Spencer runs the side of the business that makes the sawdust possible. Sales, marketing, design, operations — the thousand decisions that turn a slab of urban timber into a dining table sitting in someone's home. She is a Los Angeles native, a graduate of UCSB and Otis College of Art and Design, a former Colorado ski bum, and someone who genuinely loves living in the South. She also happens to be married to Cliff, which means the business runs on wood shavings and a very patient partnership.

Their Los Angeles wood shop catered to a clientele that included A-list celebrities and projects like David Hertz's Wing House, the Casa del Mar Hotel spa, and restaurants that people actually waited in line for. The work landed in Dwell, Martha Stewart, and The Wall Street Journal. Then they partnered with the City of Burbank to divert hundreds of trees from landfills for furniture projects. That partnership planted the seed.

In 2016, they moved to Birmingham, drawn by Alabama's vast urban forest and a creative community that felt like home. Since then, their work has shown up in the Legacy Museum, Hot and Hot Fish Club, Big Spoon Creamery, Tonchin Ramen in New York, and CityWalk BHAM. They still pull logs from the waste stream. They still mill them, dry them, shape them, and finish them. The only difference now is the trees are Southern, the shop is in Alabama, and the furniture ships everywhere.

Customer love

Testimonials

We bought a dining table from Cliff and Leigh after seeing their work at Hot and Hot Fish Club. Six months in, our kids have done their best to destroy it. The table has not noticed. The oil finish just keeps getting better. I did not know furniture could do that.

Margaret S., Homewood, AL

The Noaway compost bin sits on my counter and people ask about it more than anything else in my kitchen. A compost bin. Getting compliments. From guests. I tell them it used to be a tree in Birmingham. Then they want one too

Caroline T., Atlanta, GA

Ordered the beam bench for our entryway. It arrived and my wife said it looked like it had been there for a hundred years. That was the point, I think. Our guests touch it. They ask about it. Nobody has ever asked about the shoe rack that used to sit there.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit the shop?
Alabama Sawyer operates out of 1700 Vanderbilt Road, Birmingham, AL 35234. Store pickups are available Monday through Friday, 8am to 3pm, by appointment. If you are in Birmingham and want to see the work in person before you buy, reach out to schedule a visit.
What is the warranty?
Every piece of Alabama Sawyer furniture is covered under a 1 year limited warranty from the date of final payment or delivery. This covers manufacturing defects. It does not cover damage from misuse, improper care, or the natural movement of wood over time. Wood is a living material. It will move, shift, and change. That is not a defect. That is the point.
Can I customize a piece?
Yes. Alabama Sawyer takes custom orders. Start by requesting a quote through the site. After a rough drawing is approved, a 50% deposit reserves your spot on the schedule. Custom work means your table or bench was made for you, not pulled from a warehouse shelf. That takes time and is worth it.
How long does it take to get a piece?
Lead time on studio orders is generally 8 to 12 weeks, plus shipping time. Made to order pieces take longer than in stock items. If you need something by a specific date, reach out before you order. Ship dates are estimated, not guaranteed, because good woodwork does not rush.
What is urban timber?
Urban timber is wood from trees that grew in cities and neighborhoods, not on tree farms. These trees fell from storms, age, or development and were headed for the landfill or the fireplace. Alabama Sawyer mills them instead. Because urban trees grow slow and in real soil, the grain is richer, the color is deeper, and every slab tells a story farmed wood cannot.

Before you order

Helpful details about ordering, shipping, returns, and turnaround times.

Custom orders

Custom orders and made-to-order furniture are available through Alabama Sawyer. Their process includes using salvaged urban timber and turning it into furniture, architectural elements, home accessories, and specialty pieces. They also offer a Tree Concierge option, where they can mill a customer’s tree and manage the process from tree to table, including milling, drying, and making products from the customer’s logs.

Custom and made-to-order items have longer lead times, generally around 8 to 12 weeks, depending on workload and project size. Because these pieces are made specifically for the customer, customized items and furniture built to order are not eligible for return or cancellation.

Processing times

In-stock orders are typically shipped within 1 to 5 business days. Made-to-order items follow the lead time listed on the individual product page. Alabama Sawyer’s general furniture lead time is usually 8 to 12 weeks, though this may vary depending on workload and project size. Orders do not ship on weekends or holidays.

Shipping info

Alabama Sawyer ships orders using different methods depending on the item’s size, weight, quantity, destination, and buyer needs. Small products may ship through carriers such as UPS, USPS, or DHL. Small parcel shipping can add 3 to 15 days after the item’s lead time, depending on location. Larger furniture pieces may ship by white glove delivery, LTL/FTL freight, hybrid/final-mile delivery, or local transport when available.

Alabama Sawyer does not personally deliver or install items, but they will help coordinate the appropriate shipping or delivery method for the piece. Customers should allow about 10 days for an order to arrive after shipment, though timing can vary during peak seasons. Free shipping may be available on home accessory orders over $150.

Returns

Alabama Sawyer accepts eligible returns and exchanges within 14 days of receiving the order. Items must be unused, in the same condition received, in original packaging, and returned in resellable condition. Return shipping costs are the customer’s responsibility, and original shipping charges are non-refundable. Refunds are processed to the original payment method within 3 to 5 business days after the return is received, inspected, and approved.

Customized items, furniture built to order, lumber cut to specific dimensions, scratch and dent items, gift cards, and sale items are final sale and cannot be returned, exchanged, cancelled, or refunded.

Damaged items must be reported within 2 business days of receipt, with photos of the item, label, and packaging.
