Some pantry staples quietly do their job. Summa Salts walks into the kitchen and starts a conversation. These colorful, aromatic blends are made for cooks who want real garlic, basil, dill, citrus, peppers and other fresh ingredients in every twist of the grinder. They are lively enough to wake up a weeknight dinner, useful enough to stay beside the stove and memorable enough to give as a gift.
Main Street Collective is thrilled to welcome this woman owned Jacksonville business and its joyful approach to seasoning. Summa Salts fits beautifully into our community of Southern makers because every jar carries a clear sense of place. It begins with Sarah, her Florida garden, relationships with nearby growers and the simple belief that food tastes better when the ingredients are recognizable.
From science teacher to “The Salt Lady”
Before she built a seasoning company, Sarah McElrea was a science teacher, a lifelong cook and a gardener who paid close attention to how plants, aroma and flavor work together. Summa Salts began in her home kitchen when she started blending herbs from her own garden directly into sea salt. The idea was practical: preserve the bright flavor of fresh herbs and make them easy to reach for every day. The result was anything but ordinary.
Friends received jars as gifts. Shoppers discovered the blends at local markets. Soon, curious customers were coming back for the garlic salt that tasted like real garlic, the ranch blend filled with visible herbs and the coffee salt that somehow made chocolate, cocktails and steak taste more complete. Those early market relationships helped shape the company. Sarah listened to how people cooked, what they loved and which unexpected combinations kept them talking.
Today, Summa Salts ships beyond Florida and supplies shops and restaurants, but its process remains personal. Sarah and her team still grow many herbs themselves or source ingredients directly from farmers. They blend, bake, bottle and pack in small batches. That hands on work is part of the flavor and part of the story.
A little kitchen science
Fresh ingredients contain aromatic oils that give herbs, garlic, citrus and peppers their character. Summa Salts grinds those ingredients into coarse sea salt, then slow bakes the mixture. The salt becomes a carrier for color, aroma and flavor, so a few turns of the grinder season more than the surface of a dish. Sarah’s science background and cooking instincts meet in a process that is both thoughtful and delicious.
What makes Summa Salts different?
Many seasoning blends begin with dried powders and flavoring. Summa Salts starts with whole ingredients. Fresh garlic and garlic chives bring savory depth. Basil, dill, parsley, sage and tarragon add the fragrance of a garden. Lemon and other citrus contribute brightness. Peppers bring a spectrum of heat. Even espresso beans become an ingredient when a deeper, roasty finish is the goal.
The approach is simple, but the effect is striking. You can see flecks of herbs in the grinder and smell the blend as soon as it is opened. There are no filler vibes and no mystery flavor dust. Each salt is designed to solve a real kitchen question: How do I make roasted vegetables more interesting? What can I put on eggs that does not taste flat? How do I finish a dessert without making it sweeter? What can I bring to a host who already owns everything?
The refillable grinders are another thoughtful detail. Several popular blends are available in grinder, refill and mini sizes. A customer can try a small size, keep a favorite by the stove and refill the glass grinder when it runs low. It is practical, giftable and aligned with the company’s focus on community and responsible sourcing.

The collection includes savory staples, surprising finishing salts and a ready to give herb trio. Here are six delicious places to begin.
Coffee Salt: the finishing move nobody expects
One of the most talked about Summa Salts blends pairs sea salt with real espresso beans. Coffee Salt is not meant to make dinner taste like coffee. Espresso contributes aroma, gentle bitterness and depth, while salt sharpens the flavor already in the food. A tiny pinch can make chocolate taste richer, vanilla feel rounder and a savory crust seem more complete.
Try it on chocolate chip cookies, brownies, vanilla ice cream, French toast or maple breakfasts. Rim an espresso martini, finish an iced latte, or add a careful pinch to ribeye, smoked brisket and steak fries. The key is restraint. Coffee Salt is a finishing touch, so start smaller than you think and taste as you go.
The gift that will actually get used
The Perfect Herb Blend Giftbox gathers Basil Garlic, Ranch and Seafood Salt in a branded kraft box. Each blend has a distinct job, yet all three are versatile enough for a busy kitchen. Basil Garlic handles pasta, meats and vegetables. Ranch brings familiar herb flavor to potatoes, eggs, corn and popcorn. Seafood Salt combines lemon zest, lemon basil, dill and parsley for fish, shrimp, asparagus, chicken and salads.
This trio is an easy answer for host gifts, housewarmings, birthdays, teacher appreciation, newlywed kitchens and anyone who would rather receive something delicious than something decorative. The box is ready to wrap, ship or hand deliver.
Easy ideas for every part of the day
A good seasoning earns its spot in the pantry by showing up again and again. Summa Salts does exactly that. At breakfast, finish eggs or avocado toast with Basil Garlic, add Ranch Salt to breakfast potatoes, or give French toast a careful pinch of Coffee Salt. At lunch, brighten a turkey sandwich, grain bowl or salad with Ranch Salt. For dinner, use Vampire Killer on sheet pan vegetables, Boujee Chicken on poultry, or Basil Garlic on pasta and grilled foods.
Snacks are where the collection gets especially fun. Ranch Salt turns plain popcorn into a bowl that disappears quickly. Vampire Killer makes garlic popcorn without a heavy coating. Coffee Salt adds contrast to ice cream or brownies. A grinder on the table also lets everyone season to taste, which is useful when one person wants a subtle finish and another wants a bold one.
For best results, think about when the flavor should arrive. Season before cooking when you want herbs to mingle with oil and heat. Finish after cooking when you want the freshest aroma and a clear pop of texture. Many dishes benefit from both: a light layer before cooking and one final twist at the table.
Rooted in Jacksonville and recognized by the community
Summa Salts grew through farmers markets, local relationships and a close connection to Florida ingredients. Slow Food First Coast awarded the company its Snail of Approval, recognizing values that include community involvement, responsible sourcing and environmental impact. That recognition reflects what customers see in every jar: real people making real food with care.
Sarah even has a name for the customers who keep coming back: the Saltines. It is playful, welcoming and perfectly suited to a brand that treats flavor as a reason to gather.
Why Summa Salts belongs on Main Street
Main Street Collective celebrates makers whose products carry their stories into everyday life. A Summa Salts grinder is useful, beautiful and deeply connected to the hands that made it. It represents a former teacher’s curiosity, a gardener’s patience, a cook’s instinct and a Southern small business owner’s commitment to community.
It also makes trying something new feel wonderfully easy. You do not need a complicated recipe or a special occasion. Start with eggs, vegetables, pasta, popcorn, chicken, dessert or a favorite drink. Twist the grinder, notice the aroma and taste how much difference real ingredients can make.
